Hello! I’m Susan,
Team Wimpy’s Learner Polo Player. Together with my absolute superstar of a polo pony Petacca, I am gradually starting to overcome the nerves, self-doubt and lack of belief in myself that have held me back for my whole riding life.
This time last year my confidence was at its lowest ebb. I’d never been a brave rider, but I’d become sick makingly nervous and had no confidence in my own ability at all. After being persuaded to try hacking out on my friend’s polo ponies, I decided that I might like a retired one to potter about on. To forget all about ideas of competing and flatwork, just enjoy myself and gain confidence and actually have fun.
It could all have been a bit of a whim, if it hadn’t been for one night last June when, after a couple of glasses of wine, I signed up for an introduction to polo course that I saw advertised on facebook! I thought it would be a good way to get back in the saddle and maybe find this retired pony. To cut a long story short, I absolutely fell in love with polo, a sport which has equally terrified me and filled me with joy. I’m now a full member of Stewarton Polo Club, and I bought Petacca at Christmas. (A playing pony, not a retired hack!) So far we’ve played arena chukkas, gone for a hack around the big field and are playing in our first league as part of Team Bareback Babes .
Our goals for this year are to play my first grass season safe and sound and to have fun. I’d love to take her on a beach ride and I’ve even got half an idea of trying Trec on her if we get the chance. I want to look back and say this was a year where horses were fun not fear, and to have been a real ambassador for Team Wimpy.
